My Take on the DVD

I used to watch this show when I was a kid in the mid-1980's. and it was fun then and it was great to see that I as well as a whole new generation can watch and enjoy this series now as well. While this is only Season one I am sure that not too far into the future that will be coming out with the rest of the seasons as well. I will be nice when the whole series is out and you can finish the whole set! 

The series is fun with good writing and plot. While the artistry is different than what you would get today, it is still good never-the-less and it reminds me a lot of some of the other great 80's cartoons such as Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man and others!

If you are a Conan fan and you have never seen this series, you are missing out! Come and check it out today!

My Take on the DVD
Watching this show brings me back as I used to be so excited to watch this and I remember even having some of the old M.A.S.K. action figures and cars that I would play with when I was young. I had actually forgot about the sho until I was asked to check out the complete series DVD set. In watching this show there were parts that really brought back some great old memories. I also look at these now and see that they held a great mix of plot and characters. 

I was happy to see that shout! factory is bringing back old shows like this as I am really looking forward to sharing these with my daughters so that they can get to know me and what I liked when I was a boy!

DVD Review - Louie - Season 1

My Take on the DVD

I had never had the chance to see this show during its first season so when I was offered a chance to review this DVD, I thought it would be a great time to check it out to see what I thought. In watching the DVD, I have to say that Louie C.K., is hilarious. His cynicism as well as his stand up acts stand out as being a character that will stand the test of time.

I found myself laughing continuously in some areas, and I found it interesting to watch his and realize that you could tell that the show was not a big budget production, however, you do get big budget results (if you know what I mean).

There were parts of the series where the comedy was a bit dark for myself and my family, but all-in-all, the show was definitely a keeper. Though I do not get HBO at home, I hope that a series 2 set like this will come out so that I can make sure to be able to catch up on what happens next season!

My Take on the DVD

Being a family with Divas, Madeline always is a hit! This great series is one that my girls have enjoyed for a long time, whether it was in story format or this TV Series, they always enjoyed learning more about Madeline, her life and the adventures that she has! This DVD set has a great mix of episodes that are fun and are ones that my girls enjoyed immensely. Outside of the fact that they had not seen these episodes, they also were episodes with good plots that were both entertaining and educational. As a parent, I have no qualms letting my daughters watch Madeline and I know that the lessons they will learn from her are definite ones that will stay with them in the future!

All-New Curious George Mother's Day Episode Celebrates Hispanic Heritage On PBS KIDS GO!

CURIOUS GEORGE continues its 5th season with a brand new Mother’s Day episode celebrating Hispanic heritage and Latina moms. Premiering Friday, May 6, 2011 (check local listings) on PBS KIDS, “Mother’s Day Surprise” features George helping Marco surprise his Mami with a party. Together, they make a piñata and other festive decorations while Marco’s sister and the Man with the Yellow Hat prepare some of the guest of honor’s favorite foods. But when they see her arriving early, will the crew be able to pull it together in time to make this one Mother’s Day she’ll never forget? Learn about Hispanic culture and help George and Marco celebrate El Día de la Madre in this special episode of CURIOUS GEORGE.

“This Mother’s Day, we’ll continue Season 5’s exploration of the social sciences by showing kids how Marco and his family celebrate El Dia de la Madre,” says WGBH Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim. “We hope that through George’s adventures, kids will be inspired to explore their own family’s customs.”

Leading up to the Mother’s Day episode, CURIOUS GEORGE will be re-airing two of its favorite episodes featuring George’s new friend Marco. In “George and Marco Sound it Out,” airing Tuesday, May 3, 2011, Marco helps George find a place for his favorite band, Lobos de Plata, to play after their bandstand in the park is taken down. After a day of checking the acoustics at different locations around town, their last hope is the museum. Will it have a room that is quiet, won’t produce echoes, and is large enough for an entire band? Then in “George’s Home Run,” airing Thursday, May 5, 2011, Marco tries to hit his first Little League home run while George plays scorekeeper. Marco helps George learn how to count from 1 to 10, and George returns the favor by agreeing to be a pinch runner for an injured Marco. Can a speedy little monkey run the bases fast enough for Marco to get his first home run? Tune in for these adventures and more May 3-6 on PBS KIDS!

Dragnet

All you had to do was read your cue cards as fast as you can.

When you watch old episodes of Dragnet and see those actors standing there reading their teleprompters as fast as they can, you feel like maybe YOU could be an actor, too!

The show went from radio to television in the 1950s. Unlike most shows that made this switch, it kept the same cast.

On the radio, actors don't memorize lines. They stand in front of the microphone reading their script. Webb preferred this, so when the show went to television, pretty much all the dialog was on cue cards and teleprompters. Actors rarely had to remember lines.

If you watch the show, at least the color episodes, you can see that all the dialog scenes are shot in a studio. There is an establishing shot with a voice over narration, then the dialog is done in a studio in front of a rear screen projection. It worked pretty well most of the time. Could be done fairly easily now in front of a green screen.

It seems like it would be a good approach. You could get better performances both from stage actors who tend to over do it, and non-actors who usually talk very, very slow.

B movies vs. television

I watched a couple of Edgar Ulmer movies. One was one of his better works, The Man From Planet X, the other was his directoral debut, Damaged Lives made in 1933, an exploitation film about venereal disease in the days before antibiotics.

Neither was very good. I'm a little disappointed after hearing the French gushing over Ulmer.

I still say TV shows are the new B movies. It made sense for the French New Wave to look to B movies of the '30s and '40s, but for independent filmmakers today, it's TV of the '60s and '70s.

I was watching an episode of Charlies Angels. One of the Angels goes undercover in a women's prison. The scene where she's brought into prison for the first time seemed to have been filmed in the waiting room of a dentist's office. A scene in the prison yard was filmed at a public swimming pool----swimming pools have fences with barbed wire, so it looks sort of like a prison. Except for the swimming pool.

The show stunk. But such economy!
