WINNIE THE POOH -- "Owl's Cold"

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh.” Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original short films, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo—and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail.  “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win, Eeyore?” asks Pooh.  Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some honey. Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, “Winnie the Pooh” hits theaters in the U.S. on July 15, 2011.

DVD Review - RIO

About the DVD
As summer heats up, spread your wings and celebrate with the funniest birds in town! The all-new comedy-adventure RIO comes to Blu-ray and DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. RIO brings together vivid characters and colorful backdrops amidst energizing Latin and contemporary tunes, creating the ultimate family-friendly music and dance experience for audiences of all ages. In addition to more than one hour of special bonus features and materials, consumers will have access to all-new exclusive levels of the smash video game hit Angry Birds Rio® that showcase your favorite characters from the film!

Captured as a young bird from the wild, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network) is a domesticated Spix Macaw living thousands of miles away from his homeland, Brazil. When his human owner Linda (Leslie Mann, 17 Again) discovers that he is the last male of his kind, they head south to Rio de Janeiro to meet the only other female. But it's far from love at first sight between the socially-awkward, flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries). Shortly after Blu's arrival, the two rare birds are captured by greedy animal smugglers and find themselves lost in the Brazilian rainforest. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on a hilarious and clumsy adventure where they learn about friendship, love, courage and spreading one's wings to fly.

The creators of ICE AGE bring audiences a whole new tropical adventure in RIO featuring the most colorful cast of characters south of the Equator, including George Lopez (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Tracy Morgan ("30 Rock"), Jemaine Clement (Despicable Me), Rodrigo Santoro (Che), will.i.am (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa), Jamie Foxx (Dreamgirls), Jane Lynch "Glee"), & Wanda Sykes (Over The Hedge).

RIO will be available in a 3-Disc Party Edition, featuring the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Copy, as well as in a 2-Disc DVD Party Edition. It is available in the U.S. and Canada.

My Take on the DVD
My family and I missed seeing this in the movie theatre so we have been awaiting this movie with great anticipation. When I was asked to review this extended 2 disc version of the DVD, I can honestly say that I was very excited! In watching the movie I was amazed at how beautifully done all of the artwork was in this movie and there were many funny parts within the movie as well. The characters within the movie work so well together and there is much humor in the bantering between the characters themselves. It was interesting to see this though as I think that some of the humor in this and in other cartoons today are written in part for adults (which I enjoy though).

My kids loved the bonus features in this movie, they were dancing up a storm though much of the dance sequences and they loved exploring the world of RIO (they said that this part was cool).

All-in-all though I would highly recommend this movie to all. It was a great family film with a good message and you have fun throughout and even learn a bit about a new culture along the way!

Book Review - Topgun Days

About the Book
Bio (The author) was one of 451 young men to become a Navy Flight Officer in 1980 and the only one that year to become a much-feared-and-respected Topgun instructor; an honor awarded only to the “best of the best.”  So when Hollywood green-lighted an obscure script for a movie about the elite Naval Fighter Weapons School (aka Topgun), they knocked on Bio’s door, and the rest is history. Top Gun the movie quickly became an out-of-nowhere, runaway blockbuster that earned $353 million worldwide, catapulted Tom Cruise into superstardom, and made American fighter pilots a cultural icon.

In his memoir TopGun Days, Bio not only takes the reader into the cockpit during the breathtaking aerial moves that made the movie great, he gives an inside view of people that make Topgun the best fighter training school in the world.  Bio recalls the experience of being (what he terms) a “regular guy” who was thrown into the whirlwind of Hollywood, from gala premiers and celebrity sightings, to world renown and screaming teens.  More than just a movie homage, Bio’s story offers:

  • A Story of Perseverance -- how he overcame airsickness during dynamic maneuvering in flight training.
  •  First Person Faceoffs in the air at 700 MPH!
  • A Cold War Perspective - aerial missions to neutralize Soviet bomber threats.
  • Life-or-death adventure -- how he survived a split-second ejection from a crashing F-14.
  • Tidbits - How Topgun students receive their call-signs -- “Bio” is short for bionic, which rhymes with Baranek, Dave’s last name.
  • The first takes of Top Gun—which had to be redone because they were inaccurate or improbable—to wrapping day.
  • Bio’s first time being spotted by giggling teenage girls during the making of the movie.
  • Dozens of full-color photos of Bio’s planes, flights in action, Tom Cruise on set, and Hollywood parties, including a picture of Tom Cruise kissing Bio’s wife!
  • A glossary of flight terms and important Topgun information.
Written in a style that can only be rendered by a dangerous pilot and a top expert in the field, TopGun Days is not just a fast, fun read, but an experience.  Strap yourself into a Navy fighter jet and feel the rush caused by roaring afterburners, supersonic shockwaves, intense G-Forces, and Hollywood glamour. From beginning to end, TopGun Days is quite a ride!!!

The launch of TopGun Days in ebook format coincides with a special discount through the next several weeks; you can consider it a Top Gun 25th Anniversary special (It’s 4.99, down from 24.95—yup, that’s a real discount :)  So check out the ebook as well! links to your review when you post? Thanks:

About the Author:
Dave "Bio" Baranek enjoyed a successful and satisfying twenty-year career in the United States Navy, starting with assignments to F-14 Tomcat squadrons and later assignment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Baranek retired from the Navy in 1999 and now works as a defense contractor in the Washington, D.C., area. He lives in Burke, Virginia. Learn more about Baranek at www.topgunbio.com.

My Take on the Book
I am not a pilot, nor will I be, but in this book the author takes you on a ride you will never forget! In reading this book you simply are taken behind the veiled curtain and into the inner sanctum of Top Gun. As a fan of the original movie, it was very cool to read accounts of the school, and the movie all in one.

The book was written in such a way that anyone can understand, without technical jargon. Instead the author has written a true-to-life account of Miramar and what it took to be a part of the elite Top Gun program, as well as what it took to be a part of the making of the hit Hollywood movie.

There were so many moments that were heart stopping in the book, but one that stands out was the moment by moment accounting of the author's ejection from an F-14 into the Indian Ocean. Never before have I read something that was so blunt, honest and true.

This was a great read and one that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in flying or anyone interested in an action packed tale - it will keep you on the edge of your seat!

New Exclusive LOVE ETC. Clip Debuts!

Jill Andresevic's acclaimed multi-character documentary depicting the many stages of modern metropolitan romance, will be distributed by Paladin, it was announced by company president and CEO, Mark Urman.  The film, which is the first production from Jonathan Tisch’s Walnut Hill Media, had its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival last October, where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary. Set entirely in New York, a city that it explores and embraces in glorious detail, the film will debut in exclusive Manhattan engagements in July before expanding nationally throughout the summer.

Filmed over the course of a year, LOVE ETC. is actually five different relationship stories—all of them real—combined in a single film. With characters ranging in age from 18 to 89, the youthful end of the spectrum is represented by high school sweethearts Gabriel and Danielle, whose first-love romance is tested as graduation nears. On the other end of the spectrum are Albert and Marion, octogenarian lovebirds whose chance meeting turned into a 50 year marriage, and who remain as enamored of one another today as they were when they first married. In between, are two men: Ethan, who is straight and the divorced father of two teenagers, and Scott, who is gay and single, and the soon-to-be father of twins. Despite their complicated lives, both are on a quest to find new partners and believe that love is only one blind date away. The final couple, Chitra and Mahendra, are engaged when we meet them— their big, traditional Indian wedding is the centerpiece of the film—but, once the honeymoon is over, the realities of marriage change and challenge their life together.  A love letter to love itself, Andresevic’s film celebrates the diversity of these couples, as well as the vast and varied city they inhabit.

About the film Urman says, “‘LOVE ETC.’ is as poignant, poetic, and polished as the best fiction, but has the added bonus of being completely real.  I’ve never seen another documentary like it and, in fact, I think we need a new word to describe this utterly original--and enjoyable-- foray into non-fiction filmmaking.”   Director Andresevic added, “While most documentaries are issue-based films, we decided to examine the universal subject of love through five storylines – all of which were documented over the course of a year as the subjects lives naturally unfolded. I believe we created a film that is both authentic and humorous, and feels like a real life romantic comedy, provoking thought, while still entertaining the audience.” About the deal, Jeffrey Stewart, who produced along with Chiemi Karasawa and  Andresevic, says, “We’re so pleased to be in the very capable hands of Mark Urman, the distributor of such acclaimed films as ‘Spellbound,’ ‘Half Nelson,’ and ‘Born into Brothels.’ Mark instantly understood and appreciated the fresh approach of the film and its broad appeal. We have complete confidence in Paladin and look forward to working together.”

LOVE ETC. was produced by Walnut Hill Media, a company formed in 2008 by Stewart and Tisch, who served as executive producer on the film, and whose own visit to the City Hall Marriage Bureau to obtain a marriage license in 2007 -- an occasion defined by a broad range of couples all united by their common belief in love -- provided the initial inspiration for their maiden production.  Since then, Walnut Hill has completed another documentary, “New York Says Thank You,” which is expected to be released later this year.

In current release for Paladin is Tom Shadyac’s “I Am,” which was successfully launched in Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco and which opens in Los Angeles on March 11th and New York on March 18th.  The company recently announced that it will release the Broadway-themed comedy, “Meeting Spencer,” starring Jeffrey Tambor, on April 8th as well as Steven Peros’ Hollywood-set fable “Footprints,” which is set for an April 15th opening.

My Take on the Movie
My family really liked the first Diary of A Wimpy Kid movie and from that, my eldest daughter started reading the books as well. She will sit up in her room for hours getting lost in the story!

This movie, though not completely like the book, still was fun. The Director did a much better job in character development than in the first movie. You learn much more about the brothers and you start to truly see them living and acting lacrger than life.

Though some people may find some of the humor a bit juvenile the plot was strong and parents will definitely come to a better appreciation for the scenarions and will see their own lives reflected within the story of this as well.

Overall, I recommend this movie. Whether you have read the books or not, this movie is a fun one and one that you will definitely enjoy with your family!
