Fun Father Facts

As I'm sure you know, Father's Day is this Sunday! While you may have been guessing what your loved ones have put together for the big day, Geni (a collaborative family history site) dug deep into its profiles of nearly 17 million dads and learned some interesting facts:

  • The worldwide average number of children per father is 3.5
  • The proportion of male v. female children is 51.7%/48.3%
  • Malaysia has the most children (3.8) per father
  • Russia has the least children (2.4) per father
  • Men named Jose are most likely to be fathers
  • Men named Ryan are least likely to be fathers

Geni (www.geni.com) learned fun tidbits about fathers of a few of today's famous, and created an infographic with more detail on these well-known fathers and the statistics above. A live link of the infographic is available on: http://www.geni.com/blog/happy-fathers-day-354261.html.

Guest Post for Fathers Day by Todd Patkin

Happy Father’s Day (and Every Other Day, Too)!:
Seven Ways to Focus on Fatherhood and Live Your Happiest Life Right Now
Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the relationships fathers have with their children. Read on for doable tips to help dads start building even happier and more fulfilling relationships with their kids—starting now!

By Todd Patkin

Of course, Father’s Day is a day to celebrate dads. We buy them gifts, cook them special meals, and tell them how much we love them. After all, dads deserve all of the special treatment and attention we can give them! However, Father’s Day isn’t just a day for us to make our dads feel like kings…it’s also a great time for fathers to relish the relationships they have with their kids! If that thought makes you squirm just a little bit because you know you probably aren’t in the running for “World’s Best Dad,” don’t worry. There’s no better time to hit the reset button on your parenting style.
If your overtime hours at work, your golfing hobby, or something else entirely has gotten in the way of your rapport with your kids, take a deep breath and let yourself off the hook. The truth is, there’s no such thing as a perfect parent, and more to the point, you can start improving the relationship you have with your children right now. In fact, doing so may be a lot easier than you think!
I speak from experience. My relationship with my teenage son, Josh, is one of my top priorities and the source of some of my greatest pleasures.
Yes, being a parent can be tough, scary, frustrating, and time-consuming—but it’s also the single most worthwhile thing you’ll ever do. Working on becoming the best father you can be is the ultimate gift to you and your kids. You’ll all be happier, because when you invest in your kids, you’ll be rewarded tenfold through the joy your kids will give back to you. However, if you’re just going through the parenting motions without really putting your heart into being a dad, you’re missing out on this potentially untapped happiness.
If you’d like to make this Father’s Day a turning point in the quality of your relationship with your kids, then read on for seven experience-tested tips:

Simply be present more of the time. Yes, we’re all very busy. (If anything, that’s a gross understatement.) However, allowing your job, the errands you need to run, or your golf game to take precedence over time spent with your kids is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a parent. Simply being there, physically and emotionally, will make a huge difference in how your kids see you and relate to you.

Parenting is truly rooted in the day-to-day instead of in the “big” events like recitals and ceremonies. You can’t script or schedule the vast majority of life—you need to be thereto catch the special, opportune moments. While earning money is important and bringing home gifts from business trips is nice, throwing a baseball in the front yard or simply watching a movie while sharing popcorn on the couch is always more special!

Plug in—emotionally. It’s something we’ve all done: Your body is engaged in playing Monopoly with your children, but your mind is trying to figure out how much money will be left after all of the bills are paid, and when you’ll be able to take the car into the shop. Yes, you’re off to a good parenting start, but don’t be fooled: Being there in body is not enough. You’ve also got to give kids the first fruits of your thoughts and feelings if you really want to make a connection.

Kids are smarter than we often want to admit—they know when your mind is elsewhere, even if they have no idea that you’re specifically thinking about business or how to improve your golf swing. If this happens consistently, they’ll begin to feel less important, and your relationship will suffer. When you’re with your children, all of you needs to be there. Also, don’t be afraid to let go emotionally with your kids, especially in public. Wouldn’t it be great to be known as the person who cheers the loudest and greatest at your daughter’s ballgames, or simply as the most fun dad in town?

Let your kids be themselves. Variations on this theme happen all the time: A dad insists that his son needs to stick with football because he has so many fond memories of being on the high school team himself…never mind that his son would much rather be marching in the band. Yes, when we try to dictate who our kids become we often have the best of intentions at heart, but we fail to realize that we’re doing those kids a big disservice. As a father, make a genuine effort to discover who your kids really are and commit to supporting them on their paths.

Always love your kids for who they are. You’ve had the first portion of your life; now it’s their turn. And trust me—your kids will be happy adults only if they too learn to love and be okay with themselves as they are and for who they are. So, I’m sorry if you wanted your son to follow in your footsteps and be a star athlete. If he prefers the arts, you’d better love him for that just as well, and be cheering loudly at all of his concerts.

Parent with no regrets. Parenting is the toughest job in the world because each family and each kid is incredibly unique. There’s no foolproof method for raising a happy and successful child, and you can bet that no matter how hard you try to get it right, you’ll wish you’d done some things differently. Instead of getting bogged down in parenting what-ifs and whys, just do the best you can and make sure that you’re guided by love. Even if you’re able to see alternatives in hindsight that might have been better choices, you’ll never regret doing the best you could do at the time for your kids.

In the minefield that parenting often feels like, I’ve identified a few things that enable me to be a dad without regretting half of my decisions. First and foremost, I make every effort to be available and interested in my son’s life at all stages. It’s crucial to realize that your child will be like he is today only for today, so don’t wait for a better or more convenient time to spend time with him. You may regret choosing to work an extra hour, but you’ll never regret the extra hour you spent with your kids. Also, do everything you can to treat all of your kids equally while still putting what you’ve learned into practice. Parenting your first child will probably come with the steepest learning curve, and you’ll be able to utilize what you’ve learned with your next children.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Parenting is something that you definitely shouldn’t do alone unless you absolutely have no other choice. Since no one has all of the parenting answers, it’s a good idea to ask for help, whether from your parents, your neighbors, a psychologist, or even from your own wife, when you’re unsure about something!

I believe that both parents are equally important in a family, and I know that I was fortunate to be blessed with both a mother and a father who loved and supported me. That said, as a father myself, I think that maternal instincts might be called that for a reason. If your wife seems to bond more easily with your kids, then ask her for advice. Also, ask her to highlight childhood milestones for you. After all, not everyone instinctually knows that an eleven-month-old walking is a big deal!

Bigger isn’t always better, especially with children. If you’re feeling parenting guilt for any reason, you might be tempted to think that buying the latest and greatest gaming system for your kids will make up for your misstep. Likewise, you may believe that a big blowout trip to Disney World will make up for all of those nights you worked late. While a family trip isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s important to realize that your kids may appreciate the little things even more deeply.

Doing “normal” things with your kids on a regular basis will mean more to them long-term than the occasional extraordinary event. Small gestures like getting ice cream frequently on hot summer nights often forge deeper connections than extravagant trips and gifts. With that in mind, build regular “dad time” into your schedule. For example, you might set up a special night one or two times a month with each of your children—just you and them.

Be happy! At first glance, working on your own happiness level might not seem like good parenting advice. But this might be the most important takeaway of all. The fact is, we simply do not place enough significance on our own happiness in America. And if you’re overstressed, overworked, and discouraged, how can you expect your kids to develop any differently?

As parents, we must realize that our kids learn to live their own lives from watching how we live ours. They develop their priorities, outlooks, and attitudes based on ours. So until we fathers (and mothers!) learn how to become truly happy people ourselves, our children won’t stand a very good chance of growing into content, positive, and fulfilled adults themselves. So please, please, please, make a conscious decision to be a happier dad—and human being!—each day by, among other things, pursuing activities that you love and that will make you feel better about yourself.

Ultimately, being a great dad is less about following parenting manuals and more about just being with your kids—and not just physically, but mentally, too—and loving them unconditionally every day. By next Father’s Day, make it your goal to be even closer to and more involved with your children than you are now. You won’t regret the time spent strengthening these relationships! Really engaging with your children is one of the most fulfilling things any parent can do.

Top DIY repair secrets for Dad this Father's Day

PartSelect.com, the complete online resource for the do-it-yourself (DIY) repair market and official home of the Virtual Repairman, wants to turn every dad into Mr. Fix-It this Father’s Day. Today, the company is revealing the top dos and don’ts of DIY appliance repair to help fathers avoid the most common home-improvement mishaps.
“Many do-it-yourself dads have the enthusiasm to tackle their own appliance repairs, but not necessarily the know-how and experience to complete the projects safely or correctly”
If past home-improvement projects have resulted in more power outages and floods than actual solutions, rest assured. The following tips will help dads avoid these faux pas and make the next DIY appliance repair a breeze:

DO look into the appliance’s manufacturer warranty, as well as the warranty for your home, before you start to see if the repair in question might still be covered. There is no sense taking on a project that could be done for you at no extra cost.

DO conduct background research. Watch relevant how-to videos, know what tools are required and familiarize yourself with the portion of the appliance you will focus on. Also research how to properly handle the parts surrounding the item you’re replacing so as not to cause additional breaks or damage.

DON’T forget to disconnect the appliances from utility circuits such as electrical connections and water lines before beginning the repair process. Forgetting this crucial step could lead to damaging and dangerous situations. Appliances must be in a stable position on a level surface before you attempt to work on them.

DON’T use a part that is similar to the one you need, or one that you are “pretty sure” is the right fit for your product. Every make and model is different, and attempting to insert the incorrect repair part will more often than not result in appliance disaster. Substandard parts from your neighbor’s garage or plucked at random off a shelf at the hardware store will not give you the results you’re looking for.

DON’T use broken or improper tools. Approaching every household appliance with that same pair of pliers is not only ineffective, but it can also cause unnecessary wear to the tool, as well as injuries. All dads’ toolboxes should be equipped with the following tools in a quality brand: multi-bit screwdriver with ratcheting, combination wrench, wire strippers, nut driver, and multimeter. You should also have a selection of at least two to three types of pliers, including needle-nose, slip joint and water pump pliers.

DO take photos during each step of the repair process. The best-kept secret to successfully reassemble an appliance is to always have your digital camera on hand. Flipping backwards through the step-by-step photos you took during the repair will serve as your roadmap for piecing the appliance back together.

DO know your DIY limits and take proper safety precautions. Safety goggles and other protective apparel should be worn at all times, particularly when dealing with spring loaded mechanisms. Protective gloves should be worn when working around glass items or sharp metal edges, and if you are moving an appliance, protective footwear is a must. It is unsafe to attempt a repair that is beyond your comfort level, so don’t be afraid to call in the experts.

“Many do-it-yourself dads have the enthusiasm to tackle their own appliance repairs, but not necessarily the know-how and experience to complete the projects safely or correctly,” says PartSelect.com Service Director Steve Ash. “These dos and don’ts should serve as a good guideline for dads and help them avoid the faux pas and headaches most commonly associated with do-it-yourself maintenance and repair.”

National Coupon Month: 2010 RedPlum™ Purse String Study

Summary:
Based on the RedPlum Purse String Study consumers across the board are exercising cautious optimism when it comes to spending habits and re-prioritizing how they allocate their savings. Retailers and marketers are taking heed to this consumer behavior. Nearly 2,000 men responded to this survey. The survey was conducted for the third year on redplum.com from July 21 through Aug. 15 and results released in September in conjunction with National Coupon Month.

Basic Necessities:
The shift in consumer spending behavior toward value-oriented habits is apparent in this study. One finding that is striking is that 82 percent of all survey respondents say they use the money they save with coupons on basic necessities or paying down debt (56 percent and 26 percent, respectively). Comparatively, 70% of men said they would use the money saved for basic necessities or paying down debt. While basic necessities still ranked no. 1 among men, 27% also indicated they would use their savings on dining out.

Embracing Value…Even on a First Date:
Consider this: Based on the RedPlum Purse String Study,  74 percent of men said they would use a coupon on a first date at a restaurant  and 75 percent of men said they would use a coupon on a first date at the movie theaters. Men should feel  even more comfortable using a coupon on a first date;  according to the survey an even higher percentage of women deemed it OK ( 78% respectively). Overwhelming, both men and women would outwardly use a coupon on a first date, with a much lower proportion doing so “discreetly.”

What does this say about today’s consumer? In short, shoppers have embraced the mindset toward value. Today’s consumers are adjusting their spending and becoming more strategic in their purchases as deal seeking escalates.

Snapshot of Men and Coupon/Savings Use

“On average, how much money do you save weekly using coupons?”
•             86 percent said they save up to $50 a week.

“How much time did you spend this past week looking for coupons?”
•             87 percent spent up to three hours looking for coupons, deals and savings from all sources.

“What would you do to save 25 percent?”
•             68 percent would fill out an online form.
•             67 percent said they would sign up for an e-newsletter.
•             21 percent said they would do “pretty much anything.”

In addition to groceries, the categories with the highest interest to men are:
•             38 percent dining out, followed by clothing and automotive.

Consumer Confidence
•             42 percent report their family’s financial situation is the same as last year.
•             30 percent are less confident than last year.

iPAD ALLOWS A NEW WAY TO TELL THE FATHER-SON STORY

    Description: Description: cid:image003.jpg@01CC2097.72961250
    ZERO
a graphic memoir by Jan Egleson
     illustrated by Kseniya Galper

Available from Vook in the iTunes App store as – zero: a graphic memoir

In this riveting story of self-discovery and emotional transformation, author Jan Egleson and illustrator Kseniya Galper have combined text, still images, and moving images to create an innovative art form that ushers in a new era in publishing for serious literature. ZERO is the powerful story of a father-son relationship, the inner world of an artist, and a family transformed by the devastation of war.
Like many men, Jan Egleson grew up with a father who was emotionally absent; he struggled to understand why they had “zero” relationship.   Jan’s discovery of his artist father’s World War II journals changed all that. The journals revealed a life-long struggle with what we would now call PTSD after Kamikaze pilots flying “Zeros” attacked his aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.

On the iPad, Egleson and Galper are able to render a son’s discovery of his father’s hidden world in a way that would not have been possible in print alone.  ZERO is an almost magical blend of writing, illustration, and film that combines Egleson’s own fascination with the painter Thomas Eakins, fragments of his father’s life as a muralist working with Orozco in Mexico during the 1930’s, and excerpts from his father’s journals. As we read one especially harrowing excerpt, we see archival footage of the Kamikazes attacking the U.S.S. Saratoga.

ZERO is a graphic memoir about a son’s struggle to understand a father he never really knew, and by creating a work of art, to heal and transform.

Jan Egleson on this New Art Form
"When I first came across the boxes of journals, pictures, and watercolors, and understood  their  meaning, my only thought was to make a movie. But I quickly found that the graphic material, the art, the frescos, the footage of the war, the home movies, all the seductive images stubbornly refused to fit neatly into the format of a film."

"I began to search for a way to tell the story, and a form that would contain it ....the photographs are the ones I found curling and jumbled together in the boxes. The fragments from the journal are indeed just that, fragments of my father’s journal. But perhaps most astounding of all is the footage from the stricken carrier After reading his journal, experiencing the attack in his words as he scrawled them down aboard the burning ship, I found, after months of searching, filed away in the National Archive, the actual footage of the actual attack, filmed on the USS Saratoga. I still watch it in wonder, believing and disbelieving all at the same moment, that it is all, yes ALL, true."
“So the question became, how could all this material, film and photos and artwork and journals be combined into something artful? What form could contain all that Kseniya and I could imagine? And then, in a moment of cultural serendipity, the digital revolution brought forth the iPad.”

    Author and Illustrator
Jan Egleson is a writer and film director. He has worked in the world of Independent Film, Studio Features, and Television. His films have won numerous awards, including the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.  In addition to directing more than a dozen films over the past two decades, he has served on the Artistic Board of American Playhouse, the dramatic series on PBS, was an Executive Producer for Drama at WGBH TV, and a co-founder of Lemon Sky Productions. Currently he teaches in the Film Department of Boston University, and continues to write and direct independent films.

Kseniya Galper is an award-winning designer and illustrator. She was born in Minsk, Belarus, and moved to the United States at seventeen. Fascinated by visual arts since childhood, she studied at The New England School of Art and Design and Suffolk University.  She is particularly interested in how visual arts are affected by different cultures, and her work explores many forms of visual expression, from traditional oil painting, digital collage and illustration, to back-lit panel illustrations.  Kseniya currently lives and works in the Boston area.

Book Review - Road to a Miracle

    About the Book
A man who had always wanted to be a father was able to live out that dream when he married a woman with four kids - triplet boys and a girl. It was his love for those kids that inevitably led to his losing them.

Shaw was the man responsible for the firing of infamous Indiana University basketball coach, Bobby Knight. In the midst of the scandal of which he refers to as "the Knightmare," Shaw lost sight of what was most important by getting caught up in the fame and attention, and with that, he also lost what was most important to him - his family. His wife divorced him, and the children didn't want anything to do with him.

Then at age 65, after changing his life and completing seminary, Shaw receives an email from a man claiming to be a fan of the author that leads to one amazing discovery - the miracle Shaw had been waiting for his whole life. He had a daughter in her 40s. He didn't know she existed. She thought he was dead. And so begins his future - as a father, a grandfather.

After initial visits where hugs abound, his newfound daughter Marni surprises Shaw last Father's Day. The next day tears flow when Marni writes, "Hi there Dad! What a wonderful time we had with you. You made me feel so loved. Know that you are . . . Marni." An inspiring and true tale filled with stories that will surprise, amuse, and move readers, ROAD TO A MIRACLE  will open people's heart, mind and spirit to any miracle that may be winding its way toward them.

    My Take on the Book

This book was a breath of fresh air. As I think about fathers day and I read this book, I have to say that I was impressed with the journey that the author has shared with his readers.

You are taken on quite the journey of enlightenment as the author runs from the world that he has known and accepted to knowing and understanding that there was much more in store for him.

I was inspired by this book and the amazing bond that the author has been able to share with his readers. A story that is filled with both love and lessons from a father to his family, you will not be disappointed with the book itself.

As a reader you will find that the book is a very quick read and one that will make you continue to ask, what's next!

Think Classic When You Think of Father Day Gifts

Canadian Club is known as a classic “man’s drink” (no frou-frou paper umbrellas permitted). Kids (who are 21+) can get creative and package a bottle of Canadian Club with Mad Men on DVD(since the whisky is Don Draper’s drink of choice). The combo will surely inspire Dad to wet his whistle and celebrate his classic masculinity. Or, for dads who prefer their whisky on the rocks, you can package Canadian Club with this spherical ice tray. Because the balls of ice have less surface area than standard ice cubes, they cool your drink without watering it down as fast.

The Classic™ 12 is a celebration of the art of blending. Our master blender has created a 12 year old multi award winning masterpiece. Still with our trade mark smoothness, the classic has subtle notes of spice and vanilla. Beautiful straight but also makes phenomenal cocktails.

Aroma: soft, round, full balanced and creamy

    Body: full and smooth

Taste: spicy and creamy, with hints of vanilla and rich, mellow wood

    Finish: long and dry

What can you do with this amazing drink... here are a few ideas!

    Canadian Club Sour

1.5 parts Canadian Club Classic 12

    Juice of half a lemon

    Teaspoon of sugar

Garnish: Maraschino cherry or lemon wedge

Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Canadian Club Classic 12, lemon juice and sugar and shake. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry or lemon wedge.

    The Millionaire’s Manhattan
1 part Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry

3 parts Canadian Club Classic 12

    Maraschino cherry for garnish

Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Cream Sherry and whisky. Shake and then strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with maraschino cherry.

    Old Fashioned Cocktail

8 parts Canadian Club Classic 12

    2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters

    1 part simple syrup

    Orange peel

Directions:Muddle syrup and orange peel in a mixing glass. Add bitters and whisky and stir. Add ice cubes and stir again. Transfer to an old fashioned glass.

    My Take on the Drink
I made both a Canadian Club Sour as well as a traditional Whisky Sour and both were delicious. As a person who enjoys an occasional drink, this would be a great gift for me and for other discerning fathers like myself. The Classic 12 is definitely a drink that goes down smooth and is quite tasty as well. If you are looking for a unique gift for the master drink mixer in your life, look no further!

The Geek Dad's Guide to Weekend Fun

    About the Book
It’s Friday! (Ok, not quite, but you know you want it to be!) Jump in the car, rush home, throw your briefcase behind the couch, and get out your science goggles! It is time for THE GEEK DAD’S GUIDE TO WEEKEND FUN: Cool Hacks, Cutting-Edge Games, and More Awesome Projects for the Whole Family (Gotham Books Paperback Original, May 3, 2011, $18.00) by Ken Denmead.

Ken Denmead continues his widely successful Geek Dad series with a second book guaranteed to add some jolt in your weekend (more the electric kind than the soda kind). Last year, DIY projects made a comeback. We were wood-crafting and coloring book making. This year, we get serious. How about a game of Pun Wars? Or creating a stop-motion movie?

    Some projects include:
    • A Nerf Dart Blowgun
    • Measuring the Speed of Light with Chocolate
    • Make Homemade Root Beer
    • Make Your Own Mini Me
    • 21st Century Super Hero Cape

Here is a video of Ken (from the last book): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT-X7f4EcIs
And here is Ken’s blog: http://wired.com/geekdad

For those unfamiliar with Geek Dad and his friends, the ingenuity began as a blog on WIRED.com and quickly grew into a sensation. Soon, it had a massive following and a New York Times bestselling book Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share. In Geek Dad, Ken shared some of his favorite and most fun projects with dads and kids everywhere. Now, he has gathered some of his friends and geeky cohorts to do the same in an all -new book. THE GEEK DAD’S GUIDE TO WEEKEND FUN includes some guest appearances by Chris Anderson, editor of WIRED, Patrick Norton of Techzilla, and Ken Jennings of Jeopardy.

    So join the fun.
    Break out the glue gun.
    Let’s get this party started!

    My Take on the Book
Another awesome book from the Geek Dad. I loved his first book and this one continues on the same note, but focuses on weekend fun, and not on projects that will take huge amounts of time. This book is full of fun activities, gadgets and the like that will make your weekend go from fun to awesome!

There were so many great ideas, I loved the idea of Dry Ice Ice Cream as well as Making Your Own Ray Gun. All of the activities were ones that were easy to follow and most did not require huge amounts of money or supplies (Which was great)!

All-in-all this is a one of a kind book that will make any dad look like a mechanical genius as well as pretty cool himself. If you like to tinker and make fun stuff that you and your kids will have a blast with, look no further than this book!
