Fall 2011 Trends: Capes and Ponchos

Be sure to wear flowers in your hair.

Rag & Bone Fall 2011 Collection

Kittens, we are well aware of the likelihood of ony thinking "hippie chick" when one hears the word "poncho." For ourselves,we have a hard time hearing "cape" and not thinking of either Liberace or Superman. Or maybe Liberace dressed as Superman. Anyway, the point is connotations and how they can be bad.

So let go of them, we say. Sure, looking at the pic above, we can see that not everyone did a bangup job of coming up with a twist or injecting any modernity into the old poncho and cape, but after a long, loving assessment of the looks below we have to admit there are quite a few of these we like. Besides, the rise of the cape will dovetail nicely to our ongoing schemes of convincing starlets to embrace the turban for public appearances. The cape completes the divabitch look. This simply has to happen.

Also, believe it or not, there are a couple cute ponchos. Walk with us and form opinions.

Fall 2011 Collections
ADAM, Alexander Wang (2, 3, 4)

Mmmm. No. Nothing setting us on fire here. The windbreaker poncho is a twist, but not a very pretty one.

Altuzarra, Anna Sui, Band of Outsiders, BCBG Max Azria

Another windbreaker and a Navajo blanket style. Things aren't looking good from where we're sitting.

BCBG Max Azria, ChloƩ, Christian Dior, Derek Lam

That Derek Lam cape is kind of chic. Not with that dress, though. But it really would look awesome with a skinny pant.

DKNY, Edun, Halston, Karen Walker

Well, the Halston one is gorgeous, of course. Very Audrey. Actually, there are varying ranges of "like" going on with this row. We don't really dislike any of them. The DKNY and Karen Walker pieces are nice. The Edun would need to paired carefully.

Max Azria, Michael Kors, Rag & Bone, Rebecca Minkoff

Max Azria and Michael Kors, come on down! You're the winners of The Poncho is Right!

Peacoat poncho. We don't think so. Very funny, Rebecca Minkoff.

Tommy Hilfiger (1, 2), YSL, Zero + Maria Cornejo

These all work to varying extents. The YSL's a little Dracula, though.

So what do we think, ladies? Are you ready to tap into your inner Marcia Brady or will you be happy to stick with the coats and jackets that have served you well?
