Chelsea Clinton proudly presents mum Hillary with Inspiration Award

 

Beaming with pride, Chelsea Clinton showed just how much she admires her mother as she presented Hillary Clinton with a prestigious award last night.

Clinton was honoured with the inaugural Inspiration Award at the annual Diller-von Furstenberg Awards in New York.

Joining her at the podium Chelsea revealed: ‘My mother once said, "I wasn't born a First Lady or a Senator. I wasn't born a Democrat. I wasn't born a wife or mother."

‘But I think she may have been born an advocate for human rights, women's rights and children's rights.’

The event took place at the United Nations and Chelsea, 31, stepped up to present her mother with the prestigious honour.

The Secretary of State looked overjoyed to be receiving the award from her daughter.

‘I’ve been given lots of awards, and I cannot think of one that means more to me or has greater personal delight for me than this one named on behalf of Diane, a dear friend and also an inspiration, and presented by my daughter,' she said.

She was also quick to address how important the honour was to her.

‘I told Chelsea that it is incredibly humbling for me and the work that I’ve been privileged to do over a lot of years that never, ever am I lacking in amazement and admiration for the women that I meet from around the world,' she said.

Diane Von Furstenberg, who has long been a friend of the Clintons, said she was proud to be showing her commitment to women’s empowerment through her strong position in the fashion industry.

The Belgian-born fashion designer, who is on the board of Vital Voices, an organisation dedicated to supporting the rise of strong female leaders and promising entrepreneurs, said: ‘It is with great pride that we bestow all four of these women with an award of recognition and support.'

She added: ‘Each winner demonstrates a remarkable level of courage and leadership and serves to inspire other women all over the world.’

Another of the night’s award winners was 23-year-old, Elizabeth Smart.

Actress Laura Linney presented Elizabeth with her Vital Voices award plus $50,000 for her work against child abduction following her own experience of being held captive for nine when she was 14 years old.

The Clinton ladies were all smiles throughout the evening, despite rumours circulating that Chelsea's marriage to Marc Mezvinsky may be on the rocks.

The pair, who wed six months ago, and have fiercely denied that they are having problems.

A close friend of Chelsea's recently insisted: 'Trust me, there is no truth to any rumour about problems in that marriage. Chelsea and Marc are a great couple.'
